The unpredictability of the weather can sometimes be a pain for any avid golfer. Particularly if you're playing outside of the summer months, golf courses tend to be a little more wet and soft under foot and there is also a greater chance that you'll get caught in a shower or two during your round. Perhaps one of the worst experiences on a golf course is playing with wet, soggy feet. We've been there before and it is certainly not an enjoyable time. That's why it is very important, particularly if you're planning on playing year-round golf, to snag yourself a waterproof pair of golf shoes. Some of the best golf shoes can help keep your feet warm and dry and that can translate to better performance and ultimately, a more enjoyable round.

So what makes a good waterproof golf shoe? Well, traditionally some of the best all-weather shoes on the market tend to come with a cleated or spiked sole design to help give you better grip during the winter months. But in recent times some of the best spikeless golf shoes can also offer serious stability and traction too. Obviously you also have to think about style too, and there are some stunning options out there that will catch the attention of a range of golfers.

But most importantly, aside from being waterproof, you've got to think about how comfortable these shoes are to play in. The average golfer spends up to five hours per round wearing their shoes, so you're going to want to buy a pair that fit nicely and deliver comfort in spades. Acknowledging this, we have set out below what we think are the best waterproof models available on the market right now. While shoes are a very important factor to consider if you're planning on playing through the rain, you should also really think about getting some weather-proof apparel too. For that reason, make sure to check out our guides to the best golf waterproofs, best golf rain gear and best waterproof golf bags

Not the most premium-looking shoe

An update on the impressive adidas ZG21, the new ZG23 golf shoe is by far one of the best spiked golf shoes available right now and we thoroughly enjoyed putting it to the test out on the course. The standout feature of the new shoe is the Lightstrike and Lightstrike Pro technology seen throughout the revamped midsole. It replaces the familiar Boost technology seen in many of the best adidas golf shoes and it definitely makes a noticeable improvement in the comfort on offer underfoot.

Above the sole, the shoe comes with a new Stability Fin that helped to keep our feet locked-in as our weight shifted through the golf swing. We certainly didn't feel fatigued walking around the course in these shoes, which might we add deliver excellent comfort, support but also are super lightweight. The look is very similar to the to the budget adidas Tech Response 2.0 shoes which may turn some golfers off buying this product, but there's no denying that visually these are a very sleek pair of shoes that do look good on the course.

On the outsole, the ZG23 features a cool colored sole that comes embedded with six traditional spikes and plenty of lugs that deliver a lot of secondary traction on the shoe. Using heat mapping technology from a range of golfers of all abilities, adidas have added in grip here to where they found those players needed the most traction. That really did give us a lot of confidence that we could easily rip through each shot while wearing these excellent golf shoes.

The sock area is tricky to clean if dirty

FootJoy are known for producing some of the best traditional looking golf shoes in the game, and while this is certainly a departure from that, it knocks the socks off many of the best golf shoes in terms of the stunning visuals on offer here. The excellent pink and blue colorway contrasts a stunning white design that gives this shoe a premium look which we absolutely loved. The HyperFlex Carbon also comes with a carbon fiber construction, which makes this shoe incredibly lightweight. Having tested it on the course, these are certainly one of the best golf shoes for walking, and were so light, it felt like we weren't even playing in a pair of shoes.

The real highlight here though was the Ortholite Impression Footbed. This technology has elevated the HyperFlex Carbon from a good golf shoe to one of the most comfortable golf shoes on the market, because as soon as we slipped our foot inside, we could feel the technology at work. It delivered excellent comfort throughout our round but also improved the locked-in feel this shoe delivers. After only a few rounds, the footbed had actually molded to our feet, adding to the comfort on offer here. It is also worth noting that the waterproof upper on this shoe is very easy to clean, making it one of the best winter golf shoes if you manage to get them mucky on the course.

Laces feel a touch cheap

Replacing the Victory Tour 2 shoes, (which I absolutely loved), the newer 3 model takes total performance even further, getting 5 stars in our review. Why? Well looks wise Nike improved the aesthetics in several subtle ways - the new Full-grain leather upper has a supple feel and sophisticated look. The swoosh and midsole sections look slightly different and better in my opinion, and overall I think the shoe looks more refined. I also absolutely loved the color I got sent and there are also several other colors to choose from, as well as special edition designs too for events like The Masters.

Comfort wise these are right up there with the best on the market thanks to the extra padding around the ankle, and the internal strap on the inside of the shoe which actually contours to your feet. Nike also stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper which delivered exceptional feel, and the foam towards the heel felt very cushiony, almost bouncy when walking on the course

Grip and stability was also good, and the shoes are 100% waterproof as well. In short, I love this shoe and it covers all the bases to a very high standard. It may come with a pretty punchy price tag, but I really do think it is worth it. (you can also find these shoes with money off sometimes as well so we do recommend keeping a look out for sales on them).

Best BOA model

The grey Ecco Biom G5 shoe showing off its sporty profile and BOA Fit

A very reliable BOA golf shoe

Color: 3 (Grey; White; White/Blue)

Reasons to buy

+
Smart, modern styling
+
Excellent traction

Stable feel underfoot
+
BOA lace options enhance the fit

Reasons to avoid

-

-
Limited value for money

The Ecco Biom G5 is a stunning golf shoe that offers an athletic profile akin to many of the best Ecco golf shoes on the market. The shoe takes sole-design inspiration from the Biom G3 and blends that with the athletic look of the impressive Biom H4 to deliver what is a sleek design that many golfers will enjoy. Following our testing sessions, we must say we were very impressed with what was on offer in here, with the BOA lace-up system being the highlight of a very comfortable golf shoe. On unboxing, we were enamoured with how little the G5 weighed. It is 18 grams lighter than the H4, which makes it an excellent option to consider if you want a lightweight, waterproof golf shoe.

Turning the G5 over will reveal the six wide-spread cleats, that are positioned towards the perimeter of the sole. That helps to add more stability through your golf swing, with players really able to use the wide base to rip through each golf shot. That was something we found particularly useful in wetter conditions, with the shoe offering a lot of traction and therefore confidence when we wanted to power through each shot. The G5 also features Ecco's Gore-Tex protection on it's upper which makes it one of the best winter golf shoes around but it is also very easy to wipe down after a muddy round of golf. The leather upper is robust but soft to your feet, and combines nicely with the shoe's excellent sole to deliver a very comfortable ride.

Upper could have more cushioning for added comfort

The fourth generation in FootJoy's iconic Pro SL series sees some of the comfort we loved from the FootJoy Stratos Golf Shoe and the brand’s Hyperflex design, added to the midsole of the 2022 Pro SL. We were eager to trial this shoe out on the course, and found its updated design delivers excellent comfort. It also felt springy underfoot, returning a lot of energy as we paced our way around the golf course. In addition, the upper of the new version has been cleaned up and, as you can see from the pictures of the sample we tested, the colors have been simplified and we got to test out the stunning all-white colorway which, while they were very bright, offered a fantastic look that we think many golfers will enjoy.

Some of the best white golf shoes can get muddy pretty quick, but we found here that this option was very easy to clean considering the ChromoSkin leather upper, that ensures this shoe is 100 percent waterproof too! They kept our feet warm and dry during several rounds on the course, but that is expected considering the performance of some of the best FootJoy golf shoes on the market. Lastly comes the grip, and these shoes offer a very wide sole, that holds its own in wet and wintery conditions. The sole offers great support and thanks to its breadth, gives the user a stable platform to play off.

Style may not be to everyone's taste

Versatility is a key factor that we love to see when we test some of the best spikeless golf shoes on the market. And that is one thing that the Under Armour Charged Phantom SL Golf Shoe certainly gets right. We felt comfortable wearing the Charged Phantom both on the golf course and while we were out running day-to-day errands thanks to the shoe's sleek, athletic profile. The colorways on offer here are outstanding too and we tested the blue and white option, which comes with a very cool gradient design on the midsole that adds to the premium feel on offer here.

The best Under Armour golf shoes deliver in both performance and comfort and that is certainly the case with this option. You may look at them and be skeptical over how waterproof the predominantly mesh upper on this shoe will be, but having put them to the test on the golf course we found they held their own against the elements. They are made from a water-resistant material that is designed with Under Armour's 'Never-Wet' treatment, which will keep your feet both cool and dry. That breathability does mean that this is primarily a shoe designed for summer conditions, yet, we were reassured that if we did get caught in a deluge, the materials on this shoe would definitely keep our feet dry.

The next thing to note is the grip, and while the sole may not match up to what you might find on some of the best winter golf shoes, it did deliver plenty of traction on firmer ground, even when it was a little dewy. Comfort comes in spades here too, and we particularly enjoyed the Storm Flat Knit Collar around the ankle which provides a locked-in feel, perfect for any golfer looking for a shoe that'll deliver more stability in your swing. The midsole also delivered plenty of comfort during our round and we also loved how responsive these shoes were too!

Would be nice to have a full-leather upper

The Skechers Pro Golf 5 Hyper shoe takes comfort to the next level incorporating Skechers Arch Fit technology that provides podiatrist-certified support to your feet, with cushioning across the midsole. We thought this made the shoe one of the most comfortable golf shoes on this list having put it to the test on the golf course. That Arch Fit technology really helped to reduce aches and pains in our feet as we navigated our way around the golf course and that may make it one of the best golf shoes for plantir fasciitis you navigate your way around 18-holes.

It is also made of a breathable mesh upper that helps to keep your feet cool and fresh during your round. For that reason, this would twin nicely as a great winter or summer golf shoe considering it is waterproof too. The shoe also boasts Skechers Hyper Burst and Resamax cushioning which works in tandem to offer excellent rebound in your step. That bouncy feeling was evident on the course, with our feet not tiring after 18 holes, thanks to the responsiveness on offer here.  It also provides excellent grip on the turf through its Softspikes which deliver a low profile to the ground.

Slightly firm out of the box

The new Hovr Drive 2 addresses the specific needs of golfers, supporting your feet during the very specific movement of the golf swing. As much as we may not think it, the golf swing is a highly athletic movement and we all need the right equipment and grip on our feet to aid those movements. As such, the Hovr Drive 2 has applied the science of biomechanics in the design on its outsole to develop rotational, horizontal, vertical and internal traction. The most convincing of this traction comes from the new 3D moulded heel cup construction, creates a vacuum around the heel, that we felt locked our feet in delivering excellent levels of stability on the golf course.

Alongside working on the four dimensional traction in the Hovr Drive 2, Under Armour has introduced a new upper silhouette which is much sleeker than some of the previous models found on our best Under Armour golf shoes guide. The upper has been brought closer to the foot and that certainly improved the locked-in feeling created by the heel cup and outsole while making for a more dynamic looking silhouette. It also boasts a waterproof upper that kept our feet bone dry on the golf course, making it an excellent addition to this list of the best waterproof golf shoes.

The stunning Puma Ignite Elevate Golf Shoe resting on the golf course showing off its thick sole

Outsole not as comprehensive as rivals

The Ignite Elevate expands on the excellent Puma Ignite Articulate which was one of the best golf shoes to be released in 2022. Looks-wise, the Elevate is very similar to its predecessor but comes with a slightly thicker sole compared to the Articulate. On inspection of this shoe we loved the combination of materials the brand has used to develop what is ultimately a fantastic looking golf trainer. It comes with a textured upper that is contrasted by a black 'cage' area across the shoe that also was a great help keeping our feet locked into the shoe each time we played a shot. The pops of color on show here also add to the quality feel the Elevate delivers and we also liked the the addition of a fabric 'sock' area near to the top of the shoe that again boosts its shelf appeal.

Another thing I loved about the Ignite Articulate was how soft the upper and midsole was. The Elevate also benefits from Puma's brilliant Ignite Foam that is found in some of the best Puma golf shoes on the market. That gives it both a supportive and supple feeling, but plenty of spring too, which helps to ensure your feet don't get too tired when walking around the golf course. This shoe also comes with a back section that they have dubbed the 'Exoshell' and that aims to deliver 360º of support to your feet. On testing we found it really does lock you in place, but doesn't feel too intrusive. While we do think the grip here may struggle in wet conditions, it certainly performed in dry conditions too and offered a low-profile that gives the shoes a lot of versatility to be worn on and off the course. Overall, the Elevate is a stunning spikeless golf shoe that will appeal to many kinds of players.

How we test golf shoes

When it comes to testing golf shoes Golf Monthly has a strong testing procedure that revolves around putting them to the test over a number of rounds and in a variety of different conditions. This is especially important when trying to find the best waterproof golf shoes because that way we can test how well these shoes operate in the wet, as well as assessing their grip, stability and durability across different terrains.

We do this by just playing the game because we undoubtedly put ourselves in odd positions and stances during each round, mimicking the standard conditions any normal golfer would play in. That being said, before testing we will usually attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer’s R&D experts to understand the new technology. That isn’t to say manufacturers can buy a good review though, because we tell it how it is for all golf product reviews, not just golf shoes.

How to choose golf shoes

What factors should you consider when trying to find the best waterproof golf shoe for you? Let's take a look.

1. Waterproofing

Obviously, in this section of the golf shoe market, waterproofing is the most important factor. Most golf shoes these days offer waterproof protection but some, like the models above, are better than others. As such be sure to take an in-depth look at golf shoe specifications to see if the brand says a shoe is 100 percent waterproof, or just water-resistant. Also it is worth checking if a model has a waterproof guarantee or warranty as well, you'll find this on many of the options on our best winter golf shoes list.

2. Comfort

As you would expect, comfort is also an important factor here. Golf shoes regardless of conditions or weather must be comfortable, with the most comfortable golf shoes  having specific foam technologies, or sole designs that are built to keep your feet feeling well supported and fresh all day long on the golf course.

3. Grip/Stability/Traction

Given how slippery and difficult conditions can be in the wet, your golf shoes have to be able to perform in terms of stability and grip too. If your feet are slipping on the ground then chances are you won't hit a good shot, or you wont have the confidence to commit to a golf shot in the first place. As such be aware of what research brands have done into traction patterns, lugs and spikes on the golf shoes so you know which models will make sure your feet don't slip.

4. Looks

This is entirely subjective but you need to make sure you like the look of your golf shoes and there is a model above for all different types of fashion sense. You can go for classic finishes like the FootJoy Pro SL or the G/FORE Gallivanter respectively. Or if you want a model to stand out, we also like the Ecco Biom H4 or Under Armour HOVR Drive 2.

5. Budget

The last factor to consider is budget. With most of the models above there are designs at different price points so simply go for a design with a price you are happy to commit to.

While there are many excellent waterproof options on the market right now, why not also check out some of the best options for warmer conditions too, including our guide to the most breathable golf shoes, best golf shoes for walking and best casual golf shoes.

FAQs

Do golf shoes need to be waterproof?

It's not essential you have waterproof golf shoes, but it's very helpful if they are. Waterproof golf shoes will keep you dry if you're suddenly caught in a rain shower or if the ground is wet underfoot. Even if you primarily play in dry conditions, have a waterproof shoe will give you peace of mind that your feet will stay dry.

Are waterproof golf shoes heavier than normal golf shoes?

Generally, yes. Waterproof golf shoes tend to be made of more robust materials that protect your feet from the elements on the golf course. Compared to a pair of golf shoes that are designed for summer conditions, the best waterproof shoes will be a little more robust and are generally made from leather compared to the mesh materials on some of the best options for breathability.

Should you buy a spiked or spikeless pair of waterproof golf shoes?

Spiked golf shoes will generally tend to offer more grip on wetter terrain, so are generally a better option for winter golf. But that doesn't mean to say that spikeless golf shoes are not as grippy, with some of the best spikeless golf shoes offering great traction on any terrain. Ultimately, your buying decision will come down to what you're most comfortable with. Some players prefer to use spikeless golf shoes as they offer more versatility, but others may choose to use spiked shoes as they help to deliver, generally, more traction.
